TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – On Monday night the Council of the Cherokee Nation approved a special election to be held in June that will allow Cherokee citizens to decide on whether to call for a constitution convention.
The Cherokee Nation Constitution states that a question of whether to call a constitution convention must be submitted to the citizens of the Cherokee Nation at least once every 20 years during a general or special election.
The Council passed the resolution during its committee meeting in February and passed it out of full Council on March 11. The question for Cherokee citizens will appear on a ballot during a special election held June 15, 2024.
