TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Cherokee Nation is continuing to accept applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program for those who qualify through Dec. 31.
Applications will be accepted in-person at any Cherokee Nation Human Services location until the deadline.
The LIHEAP program is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and administered by the Cherokee Nation Human Services Department through its Family Assistance Program. LIHEAP is designed to assist eligible households with home heating, cooling and crisis intervention assistance.
Applicant requirements include:
- Live on the Cherokee Nation Reservation;
- Meet income guidelines;
- Be a citizen of the Cherokee Nation or another federally recognized tribe;
- Must not receive LIHEAP assistance from any other tribe or state department of human services.
“Being able to provide LIHEAP to our most vulnerable individuals and families is crucial, and the Cherokee Nation Human Services department does a great job administering LIHEAP,” said Deputy Chief Bryan Warner. “By assisting someone with LIHEAP it may make it more manageable, in the short-term, for them to pay for essential things like groceries and gas. During the holidays, this program can be a blessing to many of our Cherokee families.”
In order to apply for LIHEAP, applicants must supply the following documents:
- Income for everyone in the household 18 and older;
- Utility bills (main source of heating;)
- Photos IDs for everyone who lives in household;
- Social Security cards for everyone who lives in household;
- Proof of tribal citizenship for everyone who lives household;
- Physical address verification.
