CLAREMORE, Okla. — The iconic Mother Road’s 100th birthday is nearing, and the Andy Payne Route 66 Race is serving as the official kick off for the Centennial Celebration in Oklahoma.
This Saturday, April 12, hundreds will gather for the inaugural race, featuring a 5K and one-mile fun run near historic Route 66.
Payne was a Cherokee Nation citizen known for winning the International Trans-Continental Foot Race in 1928. Representing Claremore, he began the race in Los Angeles and concluded in New York City, trekking more than 3,400 miles in a total of just under 24 days.
The event is hosted by the Claremore Museum of History and is presented by Cherokee Nation.
The fun run begins at the Claremore High School track at 8 a.m. with the 5K race starting at 8:30 a.m. near Will Rogers Junior High School at Florence Avenue and E Stuart Roosa.
In addition, an awards ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Claremore Museum of History, with special guests Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. and Oklahoma Lt. Governor Matt Pinnell.
