VINITA, Okla. — Families are invited to join Cherokee Nation for a day filled with new and traditional Cherokee stories at the Cherokee Nation Anna Mitchell Cultural & Welcome Center in Vinita.

The summer storytelling event takes place on July 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features Cherokee stories shaped through a variety of media and activities.

“Storytelling helps honor, preserve and share the voices, histories and experiences of Cherokee people,” said Carrie Lind, cultural tourism coordinator. “We hope that as guests join us for this event, they grasp the importance of cultural expression and gain a sense of responsibility to carry these stories forward for generations to come.”

The event includes opportunities for guests of all ages to enjoy, with readings and performances throughout the day from Cherokee authors and storytellers:

10 a.m. – Live reading with Brad Wagnon

11 a.m. – Children’s activities and art

12 p.m. – Traditional storytelling with Candice Byrd-Boney

1 p.m. – Illustration activity with MaryBeth Timothy

Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lunch, snacks or light refreshments.

The Cherokee Nation Anna Mitchell Cultural & Welcome Center offers an exhibit gallery, a gift shop, and flexible space for cultural classes and events. It is open to the public seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 953 E. Illinois Ave.
