TAHLEQUAH — Join Cherokee Nation on Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a day celebrating Cherokee journalism and printing. This event will be held at the Cherokee National Supreme Courthouse Museum and the Cherokee Arts Center in downtown Tahlequah.
The two sites will work in tandem to tell the story of the past, present and future of Cherokee journalism through activities, demonstrations, panel discussions and curator talks with members of the Cherokee Nation Cultural Tourism exhibits team.
Inside the museum, guests are encouraged to check out an archives display of objects that tell the history of Cherokee journalism. The display features a special opportunity to engage with members of the Cherokee National Research Center to learn more about items that illuminate the rich legacy of Cherokee journalism.
Guests can take a short walk to the Cherokee Arts Center for panel discussions that will take place throughout the day. This includes a screening of OsiyoTV’s almanac “Printed Legacy: The Cherokee Advocate,’ with a discussion led by Cherokee Phoenix executive editor Tyler Thomas and assistant editor Will Chavez.
A following panel will discuss the next generations of Cherokee journalists. This panel will feature Breanna Hampton, recipient of the Cherokee Phoenix Continuing the Legacy Scholarship; Rebecca Nagle, Cherokee journalist and author; and Tim Landes, features editor for Tulsa People Magazine
In addition, enjoy a printmaking demonstration, a Cherokee language activity that utilizes stamps of the Cherokee syllabary, and a small pop-up market featuring a few Cherokee artists.
