TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Newly elected District 11 Tribal Councilor Victoria Mitchell Vazquez took the oath of office Tuesday at the W.W. Keeler Complex.

Vazquez, of Welch, won the Oct. 12 election by capturing 68 percent of ballots cast. She will serve until 2017, the remainder of former Tribal Councilor Chuck Hoskin Jr.’s term. Hoskin resigned after being named the tribe’s Secretary of State.

“To serve as councilor for District 11 is a great honor. Many years of hard work to continue the Mitchell legacy of sharing traditional art and culture has opened my eyes to how much more can be done,” Vazquez said. “I hope to establish a new system for passing on the lost arts with the help of our Cherokee National Treasure Association, and also continue the progress in our district for excellent health care, more jobs for Cherokees and expanded scholarship opportunities.”

Vazquez was named a Cherokee National Treasure for her southeastern Woodland-style pottery by Principal Chief Bill John Baker at the 2012 Cherokee National Holiday. She is the daughter of Anna Mitchell, who revived Woodland-style traditional pottery.

District 11 includes all of Craig County and northern portion of Mayes and Nowata counties.
