TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Victoria Mitchell Vazquez defeated Dana Jim and Lana Morris Daugherty in the Cherokee Nation District 11 Tribal Council election and will serve the remainder of former Tribal Councilor Chuck Hoskin, Jr.’s term. Hoskin resigned from office after being named the tribe’s Secretary of State.

The unofficial results showed Vazquez, of Welch, with 469 votes, or 67.97 percent. Jim received 153 votes, or 22.17 percent, and Daugherty, 68 votes, or 9.85 percent. Both are from Vinita.

Nearly 700 of the eligible 2,113 Cherokee Nation citizens in District 11, including absentee voters, cast their ballots Oct. 12 to determine who should help lead the tribe for the remaining three years and eight months of the term. District 11 includes part of Craig, Mayes and Nowata counties. Results are expected to be certified by Oct. 16.

Vazquez, a Cherokee National Treasure for her southeastern Woodland-style pottery, will be sworn in at a later date, after results are official and any challenge period has expired.
