Cherokee Heritage Center hosting special events in October

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Cherokee Heritage Center is hosting a variety of special events during the month of October.

On Saturdays in October, children grades K-12 can participate in a Cherokee treasure hunt specifically designed to help them learn about Cherokee culture. The event is from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and includes additional activities such as storytelling, make-and-take crafts, 1890s games and more.

The cost to participate is $12 per child, and parents have the option to either drop off children or stay and participate for no additional cost. Special arrangements can be made in advance for schools and home-school groups. Registration is required at least seven days in advance. On Saturday, Oct. 13, CHC is hosting a traditional archery tournament from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Participants can compete with blowguns, atlatl and the traditional bow for only $5 per category. Adult and youth divisions are available, and advanced registration is required. To register, please contact Brian Jackson at 918-316-4243.

Cultural classes are offered throughout the year to advance the Cherokee Heritage Center’s mission to preserve, promote and teach Cherokee history and culture. The October class is slated for Oct. 27 and focuses on Southeastern iconography with guest lecturer America Meredith. The class is from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and includes a craft incorporating the symbols discussed. The cost to participate is $40, and early registration is strongly recommended.
